The Gifford Youth Achievement Center (GYAC) was pleased to welcome Susan Cotter as a new board member in September 2023. She currently serves on the organization’s Operating Board of Directors. Susan brings with her a plethora of volunteer experience, which has cultivated her love for community and eagerness to support youth.
To learn more about her, read the brief Q&A below:
Q: When did you join the board?
A: “The September board meeting will be my first.”
Q: What are you most passionate about?
A: “Education, especially for low income and minority students. My husband and I have created scholarship funds, specifically for minority students, at four schools, which we are affiliated with.”
Q: What/who first brought you to GYAC?
A: “Lisa Holmes invited me twice to an information session and tour of GYAC. I was very impressed, and her enthusiasm for GYAC was contagious.”
Q: What do you love most about GYAC?
A: “I am very impressed with the passionate and dedicated leadership at GYAC. Their commitment to changing the lives and futures of each student through the many activities offered, enrichment programs, and teaching of life skills is amazing.
Q: How have your life experiences prepared you to serve on GYAC’s Board?
A: “Since I have benefitted from an excellent education and financial security, I believe it is important to give back to those less fortunate. Throughout my volunteer years, I have participated in or chaired many fundraisers. Some of the fundraisers were for community outreach, but most have been to raise funds for scholarships primarily for low income and minority students. Young people are our future, and we need to ensure that low-income children are provided with educational opportunities, life skills, and support to be successful in school and therefore in life. I believe my past volunteer experiences are in keeping with GYAC’s mission.”
Q: What are your hopes for GYAC’s future?
A: “I am brand new to the GYAC Board and I look forward to learning more and more about the wonderful work that the Center is involved in. I would hope the GYAC can continue the impressive path it is on with the financial security to reach an even greater number of children.”
Q: What’s your favorite decade and why?
A: “That’s a difficult question because I have loved all seven decades, especially the ones which include my four children and ten grandchildren.”
GYAC is delighted to have Susan Cotter has a new board member. Her passion for education and supporting youth is inspiring. The organization looks forward to creating wonderful memories with her, as she makes a positive impact.
